How I Schedule a Homeschool Day with Three Kids (Without Losing My Sanity)

Homeschooling three kids at different levels—while keeping the house (mostly) together and squeezing in time for myself—sounds like a juggling act, right? Well, it is. I’m not here to sugar coat it or wave some magic wand that shows all my secrets, because honestly…I don’t have any. But over time, I’ve found a rhythm that works for us.

If you’re homeschooling multiple kids and wondering how on earth to structure your day, here’s what works in our house.

Our Daily Homeschool Flow

Morning Routine (7:00 – 9:00 AM) – Slow & Steady Wins the Race
Mornings set the tone for the day. While my kids eat breakfast, I sip my protein shake, unload the dishwasher, and mentally prep for the day ahead. Then, we all get dressed, make our beds, and do a few quick chores (because a tidy house = a less stressed mom).

Morning Walk and Outside Play (9:00 – 10:30 AM) – Nature is the Best Classroom
Every morning, we head outside for a family walk. It wakes us up, gets our energy flowing, and—bonus—counts as science and P.E. (because we always stop to check out birds, bugs, or the changing seasons). The girls have really gotten into biking our morning loop. We live in the foothills of the Sierra, needless to say, they are getting great at hill intervals. Once we return home, its free choice outside. Whether its exploring our creek, swinging on the swings, or making the millionth mud pie.

Lesson Time (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM) – The Focus Window
This is when my 2nd grader and kindergartener tackle their core subjects. We also make lunch in there! Usually it is just a snack board, why over complicate things?

Our Current Subjects:
History/Science – We alternate each day
Math
Handwriting/Copywork
English
Reading

Meanwhile, my preschooler gets their own special activities—sometimes joining in, sometimes playing nearby. And let’s be real, sometimes chaos happens—but that’s okay! And by sometimes, I mean most days…more on that later!

Quiet Time (1:00 – 2:00 PM) – Rest, Read, or Create.
While the littlest naps, the girls have the choice to rest, read, or create independently in their rooms. This is my time to get a good afternoon workout in, plus it’s my version of ‘afternoon coffee’. I try to wake up early in the morning for a workout as well, but again, let’s be real….kids!

Afternoon Adventures (2:00 – 5:00 PM) – Unschooling in Action
This is where the magic of homeschooling shines. We might:

  • Go for a bike ride
  • Read in our favorite cozy spot
  • Do an art project
  • Hit the trails for a hike

This keeps learning fresh, fun, and full of movement.

Evening Wind-Down (5:00 – 8:00 PM) – Real Life Learning Continues
Dinner, reading aloud, and bedtime routines happen here. We wrap up the day with some quiet time, because let’s be honest, we all need it.

Homeschooling is About Flexibility

Some days, our schedule flows beautifully. Other days? It’s a total mess. And that’s okay. The key is flexibility—adjusting based on energy, mood, and what life throws at us.

If you’re homeschooling multiple kids, give yourself grace. Find a rhythm that works for your family, and don’t be afraid to switch things up when needed.

So, how do you structure your homeschool days? Drop a comment—I’d love to hear!
