Vacation Day 6: Wild Animal Park – A Beautiful Day, But Maybe a Bit Too Much

Day 6 took us to the Wild Animal Park, and we were all incredibly excited to be there. It’s one of those places that promises adventure and unique animal encounters. But, I’ll admit, I should’ve planned this a little better. The size of the park was definitely overwhelming for my kids, and while the adults appreciated the vastness and beauty of the grounds, the kids didn’t quite get the full experience. Maybe we were all just a little too tired at that point to fully appreciate it.

Looking back, I think the San Diego Zoo might have been a better fit for our group. It’s more compact, and there’s a bit more to see in a smaller space, which might’ve been easier for the kids to manage. Still, we made the most of our time there and had some great moments. The elephants were a highlight, even though they were in a temporary space due to construction on their new exhibit. We had to wait in a line to be escorted down to the temporary area, but once we got there, it was worth it. The elephants were out and about, very active and entertaining to watch.

Another fun surprise was the platypus. I had no idea they were so small! We all thought they were the size of a beaver (which is apparently not true—how big is a beaver, anyway?), so seeing them up close was a real treat.

And then there was the moment we’ll never forget—losing Buddy’s AirTag on the safari. Yes, you read that right. After a morning detour to Walmart to search for it (thanks to my lovely husband dropping it there the day before), this time I lost it in the safari. It was one of those funny mishaps that becomes a cherished memory, though, and we couldn’t stop laughing about it the whole day.

Overall, we had fun, but we were all pretty wiped out by the end of it. I think we had reached the point of exhaustion where even the best adventures couldn’t fully revive us. But, hey, that’s part of the vacation fun, right? The kids still had a blast, and we got to see some amazing animals along the way.
