How We’re Adjusting Homeschooling During a Remodel

I knew the remodel would be disruptive. I knew we’d basically lose access to our upstairs — the main living area and our bedroom. I knew it would be dusty and loud and a lot of work. I designed the whole kitchen and bathrooms myself, so even before construction started, it was a mental marathon.

Then the actual construction began, and homeschooling ground to a halt the first week. I had to rebalance. We had to stay home for the most part, and the kids had to go with the flow. Fortunately, they did.

I packed up our textbooks and moved them downstairs to their rooms. For the first half of the remodel, that became our classroom. We planned a few getaways to break up the monotony, and I found that our neighbor’s deck became the perfect makeshift schoolroom. We’d play outside and then settle in on the deck for some schoolwork before lunch. It actually worked out well, and it was a good reminder that learning doesn’t have to look the same every day.

We are very much in survival mode right now. I’ll be doing a full blog series on the remodel — from design choices to construction progress to before-and-afters. But for now, this is just a peek into what it’s like homeschooling in the middle of a major home project. It’s messy, unpredictable, and my gosh is it loud… but we’re making it work, one day at a time.
