Nebraska Trip: A Vacation Series | Day 2: The Boat

Planes, trains, and boats—okay, just planes and a boat, but still. Sunday morning, we headed to small town church. It was sweet and simple, and even if the kids missed the lights and theatrics of home, I loved watching them experience something new. There’s something grounding about a room full of people who’ve known each other for generations, singing the same hymns they’ve sung for decades.

After church and lunch, we loaded up for a lake day. Full disclosure: we were all a little tired (tantrum level = moderate), but a beach stop perked everyone up. The kids swam, splashed, and fully embraced lake life. The sand between their toes, the slightly questionable snacks, the warm lake water—pure summer.

The boat ride itself was peaceful and somehow still thrilling. The breeze was a gift, and the boat gliding over the water was a lullaby. Even the toddler chilled out long enough to lean back in someone’s lap and just enjoy the ride. The evening ended with a cool breeze on the porch, farm silhouettes against the Nebraska sunset, and kids who refused to adjust to Central Time. I didn’t mind—there’s something magical about long summer evenings when the sky takes its sweet time turning dark.
