My Minivan Has Two Wheels and an E-Motor: Meet the Specialized Haul LT

There comes a moment in every mom’s life when she wonders: Is there a cooler way to get from point A to point B while carrying three children, snacks, a water bottle I’ll forget, and a questionable collection of rocks someone insisted we bring home from the park?

For me, that moment arrived with the Specialized Haul LT — the e-cargo bike I now lovingly refer to as my minivan. Except it’s way cooler. And gets front door parking. Every. Single. Time.

A VBS Week Victory Ride

This summer, I logged over 70 miles in one week on my Haul LT. Why? Because I biked the big kids five miles up the road to Vacation Bible School every morning — and then cruised the five miles back solo with my toddler on the back, chirping happily about birds, trash trucks, and whatever snack we needed to eat when we got home.

I did that every day. And I survived. Nay — I thrived.

I mean, sure, my thighs burned, but I had freedom, fresh air, and no parking lot meltdowns. I also got front door drop-off like a queen while other parents circled in their SUVs trying to find a shady spot.

This Thing Rides Like a Dream

The Specialized Haul LT is the bike I didn’t know I needed — and now can’t live without. It rides shockingly smooth, even fully loaded with kids, backpacks, lunchboxes, and the occasional grocery bag swinging off the side like a weird parade float.

We live on a steep hill — like the kind where people question your life choices — and this bike somehow still climbs it like a champ. Okay, fine, I still climb it, but with the motor support, it doesn’t feel like I’m actively trying to pass out.

The kids? They giggle over bumps, yell “Faster, Mommy!” when I hit 20 mph, and now complain when I take the car. So I guess I’ve set the bar too high with the fun rides.

The Art of Balance (and Squirrel Moments)

Now, let’s talk balance.

Three kids on the back of a bike sounds like a recipe for disaster — and it definitely can be, if you don’t know how to counterbalance a surprise “Look a squirrel!” moment from your 4-year-old while her sister decides it’s time to wave at the cars behind us mid ride.

Luckily, I’ve spent enough time riding and racing bikes to have a sixth sense for these tiny chaos bombs. I ride confidently, even when the backseat resembles a wiggly, snack-fueled dance party.

But What About the Big Kid?

Our 7-year-old has officially hit the I-can-do-it-myself bike phase, which is adorable… until we hit a hill. She’s not quite ready to conquer our neighborhood climbs solo, so when I’m riding without another adult, she still has to ride on the back of the Haul LT with her siblings — slightly reluctantly, but always smiling once we get going.

I could rig up the tow rope… but let’s be real: I’m not towing a child behind an already fully-loaded e-cargo bike up a hill unless someone bribes me with a month of solo runs and gym workouts. Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds exactly like something I would figure out how to do…*facepalm*

Why I’ll Never Go Back

I’m officially in love with this bike. It’s not just a ride — it’s a lifestyle. I’m saving gas, avoiding parking drama, getting sunshine, and spending real quality time with my kids (even if that time occasionally includes someone whining that their helmet is “too tight”).

Whether we’re heading to gymnastics, church, the library, or just off on a neighborhood adventure, the Haul LT is our go-to ride. It’s more fun than the car. It sparks joy. And did I mention the front door parking?

Because that alone is worth its weight in gold.

Thinking about joining the bike life? My advice: Get a good helmet, start slow, and find a bike that makes you feel like a superhero mom on two wheels. For me, that bike was the Specialized Haul LT — and I’ve never looked back.

Except, of course, when someone drops a hair tie on the road and screams, “WAIT! GO BACK!” Because yes…that does happen.
